It starts off as discomfort. Gamora doesn't even register it at first- Peter does. A man so completely devoted to never harming her takes stock of how her eyes flutter shut for a fraction of a second in pain not pleasure when he touches her chest. She writes it off as him being sensitive which should have been her first clue. She always takes Peter seriously when it comes to the ones he loves. She's never written off his feelings before. A part of Gamora knew something was up. It was easier to push Peter away from the truth. It's a bad habit she has yet to break at this point.
It's the throwing up that makes the whole lie hard to keep up. Her healing implant prevents Gamora from getting sick or has up until now. They go to the Nova Corps for lack of better option. They have the most advanced medicine in the galaxy.... that wouldn't try turning Gamora into a science project at any rate. She is the last of her kind, after all.
Her skin crawls the whole time they run their tests, but she insists on being alone. She knows they'd be there. Rocket of all creatures understands how hard it is to submit yourself willing to tests. Her pride won't allow them to see her squirm through the whole thing. Groot is already worked up enough as it is by his mother's distress. Better for Rocket to talk him down.
Eventually, the tests come in. The end result shocks her to her core. They tell her it shouldn't be possible. Her implants should have prevented it. There's a child growing in there. It's still small and early in development, but very viable. It's when they start hypothesizing about how the father's parentage might be a factor in making this possible, that they ought to be looking into Peter, that she spooks. She remembers the piles of bones left by Ego and shudders.
She has her clothes back on in under a minute and bolts in spite of the doctor's protests. "We're leaving!" Gamora announces as she leaves them in the dust without any explanation. Good luck with that landmine, Peter.
Infinity war? I don't know her...and aaaaah this is perfect
It was nothing at first, just little telltale sign that shouldn't happen at all because Gamora's body used to be unaffected by sickness. Peter told himself that maybe they were working too much and that she was tired, even though the mere idea of Gamora not being able to keep up was ridiculous. She was 10 times - and then some more- stronger than he is.
And then symptoms kept piling up, mood swings and fatigue were unusual enough that the situation made Peter on edge, although he tried to keep it to himself as to not worry her more. It didn't really help that Gamora was very adamant about ignoring whatever might be happening and refusing to talk about it no matter what. By the time nausea started and she had trouble keeping food down, he was already fearing the worse.
His mom's sickness started with little things as well. Dizziness, headaches, and personality changes that gradually became more frequent and more severe. The situation became impossible to ignore then and it's impossible to ignore now.
Even though he wanted to stay by Gamora's side during the proving, he respected her privacy enough to wait outside with the other, looking oddly pale and so uncharacteristically quiet that even Rocket gave him a concerned look.
Peter almost trips on his long coat as he stands immediately after Gamora shows up, shouting and already heading to the door. He spares a confused and alarmed look toward the doctors who had tried without any luck to stop her and then runs after the green woman.
"Gamora, wait!" Behind him, he hears Rocket threatening asking the doctor what the frack is going on before he 's too far away to hear the answer. He would rather have her tell him, if it's as bad as he imagines. "We can go somewhere else, talk to better doctors or...or something! Please, we're here for you, don't go..."
If she knew what happened to Meredith Quill in detail, Gamora might not be so stubborn. She's a lot of things, but no longer intentionally cruel. The former assassin is scared. It shows on her face when Peter does catch up with Gamora. She's exhausted and the anxiety isn't helping with that.
She spins around to face him, still shouting. "I don't want more doctors! I want to leave!" She can feel her hands shaking and forces them into fists. It's hard to face Peter now that she has an answer. He's been her refuge in so many ways. She wants to confess what's going on and cry. It's too much to handle alone. There's still the threat of Thanos out in the galaxy. There is the fear that someone will take advantage of her weakened stake to hurt Peter or her. She thinks of the Collector and his oddities. It's not insane to think they're in danger. When Gamora is vulnerable, she lashes out.
Gamora looks past Peter and orders, "Shoot anyone who follows us." Because they're leaving. It doesn't matter that technically is Peter's call. She wants out. Now. The others will fall in line.
There are things about his childhood that Peter isn't ready to share with anybody, they're not very nice ones and him suffering through them was bad enough. He knows Gamora isn't lashing out of the blue, whatever the doctors told her had scared her enough to cause this reaction and Peter just want to make things better. Too bad he doesn't know how so he raises his hands in alarm and gives a quick nod.
"All right, all right. We're leaving, promise. We will do whatever you want..." Even though all Peter really wants to do is gather her into his arms. He's never seen her shake for other reasons that weren't fury or cold, it only makes the sharp, dread feeling in the pit of his stomach to get worse. Peter looks over his shoulder only to see a pissed off raccoon leaving the clinic followed by the rest of his crew, it looks like Rocket didn't get an answer from the doctors either.
"Guys, get moving. We need to be off like a prom dress!" Peter can hear Drax asking 'what does that even mean?' by the time he looks back at Gamora. He reaches out to touch her arm, Peter can't just stay there looking and not attempt to comfort her in some way even though he might end with broken fingers. "I'll shoot anyone who isn't our crew if they try anything, you have my word. And we're leaving as soon as we get to the ship."
When they catch up on them, Peter will ask Rocket to pilot and leave Drax and Mantis to handle poor Groot's confusion for the time being. He can't give them any answers, doesn't have an explanation, but if Gamora wants to leave Xandar, they sure as hell won't be staying.
She tenses the second his hands on her. Gamora opens her mouth and shuts it as she visibly holds herself back from ripping his hand off. After a couple of tense seconds, she starts to breathe again. The muscles in her arm start to loosen ever so slightly as Gamora allows herself to really look at Peter. It doesn't make this easier despite knowing how badly she needs him right now. "Thank you." She holds his eyes long enough that he'll know she means that before leaving for the ship without another word.
She knows they're still trying to call them back. Maybe she'll come back if only to make sure they keep their mouths shut. It won't be now. The impulse to run is too strong to deny.
Gamora doesn't say a word to any of them. She barely spares them a glance which won't make things go better with Groot. She's just not in a place to hold it together for anyone. The former assassin gets in her seat and stays there until it's safe to go to their room. The silence isn't doing anything for the tension. Gamora can't worry about her family right now. She collapses into the bed she shares with Peter, boots still on as she tries to muster up anything to think or feel that isn't blind panic. It isn't going well so far.
Any other man with more common sense and fewer concerns might have let her go when Gamora tensed up. Peter doesn't have any of those thins, and he leaves his hand there, not a firm grip but a persistent touch. He's there for her, even in difficult times, even if it really looks like, for a second, she wants to tear off his arm. His breath catches in his throat and doesn't leave until she thanks him. If anything, it only makes Peter feel worse because he knows this isn't enough but it's maybe all she can accept at the moment.
And then she's gone. First to the ship then to her room.
There will be a few messages left from the Doctors by the time they bother to look at the ship's communicator. The problem lays on the fact that Mantis and Drax never really pay attention to it, Groot is too young and Rocket is piloting. Peter would like to talk to the doctors but he's scared, and he doesn't want to ruin Gamora's trust by learning about what happened behind her back.
Peter tries to give her space, he really does. Any tickling second feels like a lifetime and the knot in the pit of his stomach makes his whole body hurt with unreleased tension. He goes to the kitchen to make himself useful, fills a glass with water, and makes some toast to bring the food to her. If anything it gives him an excuse to knock on the door or their room and peer inside.
"'Mora? I brought you something to drink and eat if you are up to it. Can I come in?"
Peter will find her curled up in bed. Her body can't decide once again whether to throw up or beg for more sustenance. It's a frustration she's growing used to for better or worse. She's too proud to get up to try resolving it one way or another. For better or worse, Peter has come in to fix things as usual. Gamora shoves down the impulse to get defensive about it. Her stomach lurches and she realizes what the being growing inside her wants finally.
"You can." Gamora admits with a sigh. She turns her head towards Peter. Her eyes sparkle as she shoves down yet another urge to burst into tears. "I'm hungry." She forces herself into a seated position, her vision swims unhappily. Another thing to ignore.
Relief washes over his face when Gamora allows him to come closer with minimal fuss and he's by her side in a minute, still holding the tray somewhat awkwardly. He remembers when he used to do this for her mother too when he brought her something to eat because she was too weak and sick to leave the bed. Something twists unpleasantly in the pit Peter's stomach but he gives Gamora a small smile, as if all is well.
"I don't think you have eaten all day, so it's no wonder."
He leaves the try on the bedside table and kneels on the floor next to the bed. After only a moment of hesitation, he reaches up to cup her face, thumb brushing the marks on her right cheekbone.
"Ey." He wants to say a lot of things but finds himself tongue-tied. There might be no words that could console her but it would help to know what is happening. "Take it easy, love. It's been a stressful day, do you want me to draw you a bath or something...? It could help you relax."
He's trying so hard to be strong her. Gamora's heart breaks for him. She doesn't know what he's thinking. It's easy to tell when he's miserable. Peter can't stay still for a second. He rushes from one fix to the other in the hopes that something will stick. She knows it's her fault. She dragged the discovery of this out and now isn't telling him anything. "Not just for me." Gamora admits. She rests her hand over Peter's. Her gaze softens as she stares at him and tries to freeze the moment. Nothing has to change.... except everything has. She has to start explaining this to him.
"Peter, you can't fix this." Gamora starts. Nailed it. That will definitely calm Peter down.
Gamora could write a book bout her comforting skills, although it would probably be titled '1001 ways to give my boyfriend a heart attack in 6 words or less'. It's true that Peter has been desperate to do something, anything, that might help her feel better and the fact that he has no idea why she's feeling like this doesn't really help him. And so, her first comment about eating not just for herself goes over his head but the second one fills him with dread.
"But there must be something someone can do. I... we...we could check around the galaxy." The hand touching her cheek starts to shake slightly." We just need to find the right doctor, the right treatment, or maybe someone who can do magic."
She knows her mistake as soon as his hand trembles in hers. Gamora looks alarmed at his reaction. The last thing she'd ever do is hurt Peter intentionally. She has despite herself. She scrambles to make it right. "Peter, I'm not going to die." That's an impossible promise to make. Everyone dies. That is a discussion for another day.
Her gaze drops along with her hand to rest between them. "I'm pregnant." Gamora can't look him in the while she admits it. This is too real. This shouldn't even be happening.
He's been trying to reign on his nerves for some days now but Peter is at a loss and his brain jumped to the worst-case scenario. When she confirms that is not what he fears, the relief is so sudden his brain doesn't immediately register the whole information.
"Oh thanks any god out there. I thought...my mom, when she got sick she started to act like you and I figured...it was stupid, I am stupid. I...wait...pregnant?" Green eyes widen and Peter looks like a like deer in the headlights before his head whips down to stare Gamora's midsection, then back to her face. He suddenly looks a bit teary-eyed, his voice higher than before as he reaches out to grab both of Gamora's hands in his.
"But how? I didn't know we could do that! Since we are different species and all...but a baby! We're going to be parents! That's...oh you don't look too happy about it." His smile vanishes as soon as he notices her bowed head, something cold and unpleasant settling in his gut again. "Gamora?"
"You're not stupid." Gamora begins to argue. She knows sometimes Peter comes off that way. He makes decisions in the heat of the moment or acts childish. Gamora knows he's brilliant in his own way. Why else would she follow him? She wasn't always in love with Peter Quill even if it feels otherwise.
She watches him go through a sea of emotions. She can't hide her trepidation from Peter. He knows her too well now. "They think it's because of your father." She starts before shaking her head. That's not what Peter cares about.
"I... It's dangerous. You have to know how risky this is." She trembles unsure if it's from anxiety or needing to throw up again. She doesn't say anything else because it is hard to put into words. Gamora hates vulnerability. Now isn't the exception.
Petr gives her a pitiful smile but a small nonetheless. Most of the time he plays the fool because it works to his advantage if people underestimate him. But he's also aware that he isn't always the sharpest pencil in the box and that he makes rushed decisions. Gamora trying to comfort him so quickly it's very sweet and it only makes him love her more.
The smile vanishes at the mention of ego, as Peter is putting the bits dn pieces together. They're from different species, logically, their biology should have been incompatible. Ego had the ability to match up with any other creature that existed out there and reproduce yet it never occurred to Peter that his hybrid biology could do the same as a pure Celestial. Well, fuck.
It's a lot to take at once, no wonder she has been so alarmed. Peter shifts his posture once he realizes that she's shaking, standing up to then sit next to Gamora on the bed and wrap an arm around her. They both need the comfort.
"Our lives are always dangerous, that never stopped us before. Is that the only reason why you're not...why you might not want it? If things were different, if we stayed in a safe place, what would you like to do?"
In the end, it's her choice because it's her body, he knows that. It would break his heart a little, all Peter even wanted was a proper family, but he would accept it.
Gamora can't get herself into his arms fast enough which should say it all. She's frightened. He makes her feel safe even if technically speaking she's still the strong one of the two. It doesn't matter really. She knows if everything she feared happened right now, no one would be able to get past Peter. He'd find a way. He loves her in a way no one has since her parents were killed. He'd make the impossible happen just for her.
She settles her head against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. It does a lot to calm the storm in her mind. "I'd like to have the baby." She's just now realizing that. Gamora glances up to say it more firmly. "I want our baby, Peter. I just don't know what we're going to do when other people find out. There are so many ways this could go wrong." That's all she can see right now.
Peter twists his body so he can embrace her better, both of his arms pulling her close, his hand drawing circles on her back to try and soothe her. He rocks them a little and kisses the top of Gamora's head, waiting for her to let it all out, as she so much needs it.
There's a lot of to process and his mind is still trying to wraps itself around the fact that this miracle really happened, that they are going to be parents. That she really wants to do this with him. It's enough to make Peter teary-eyed even as he tries to calm down his own racing heart.
"I want that too, with you. I always wanted it." Looking down, Peter cups her face gently, thumb brushing her high cheekbones. He replies honestly because there's nothing else he can do. "I don't know yet. But we're the Guardians of the Galaxy and we already raised Groot just fine. Or we're trying at least...Pity anybody who tries to go against us."
For a moment, the swordswoman shuts her eyes and lets herself breathe. Gamora has been a mountain of anxiety since this began. For the horrors Thanos did to her body, she's always been able to rely on it to keep her safe. The thought of losing any of that power is terrifying. Having Peter around gives her perspective. She can't know that for sure. Her eyes flutter open as his thumb brushes over her cheekbones.
"We'll need to go back. The Nova Corps are probably the only ones we can trust not to betray us; not willingly at least." All business. So focused on the plans and stakes that for a second she fails to process what he's saying.
Gamora blinks twice as it finally occurs to her what this means. "You really wanted this?" Even after all this time she doesn't quite get how much he loves her. It still surprises Gamora.
Now that Peter knows the truth, he understands the erratic behavior of her last days better but it doesn't make him any less troubled. On one side, he's static that they get the chance to start a family, on the other, he can understand why everything is so overwhelming and stressful for Gamora and wants to make it better.
"We will go anywhere you want. It's probably for the better that we tell the Nova Corpse, we might not be available for missions for a little while. But don't stress yourself, love. We will figure out a plan. I'm the best at plans."
He gives Gamora a grin, even if he's aware that said plans are often nonsense. They end working in the long run and now Peter is only aiming to calm her a bit and making her smile. Her question makes him fidget in return, looking bashful. "Yes, of course. I think we would be great parents. And there's no one else I'd rather start a family with."
Gamora chuckles softly. His plans are inexplicable and insane. She can't deny they tend to work out. That makes her feel better. There's one obvious threat to them. Gamora knows she won't stop being afraid of it any time soon. The rest seems easier to handle now with Peter on board. He does paint a beautiful picture even while being a little shy about it.
"There's no one else I'd want to do this with either." Gamora confesses softly. She thinks that's obvious in her case. She's never shown interest in anyone else. "I hope they have your eyes. I always thought they were beautiful."
All's well that ends well, they say. So what does it matter if there are some unexpected explosions and fight along the way? From now on Peter promises to be extra careful with the way they decide to act, but it's also up to the other to behave. Until Thanos is stopped, and that doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon, he will always be a looming shadow over them but they can hide for a while. Peter leans in to nuzzle her and then gives her a kiss after that admission, far too giddy to use words at frirst.
"I hope they get your skin color, it's very pretty. And then the green will match the eyes." Keeping an arm still wrapped around her, he reaches for the plate of food he brought her earlier. It's just toast but it might still help to calm her nerves. "You need to eat something, love."
It is a beautiful thing for Gamora to picture. She vows to hang onto the mental image and the tender sensation of his soft kiss that follows. This is a better thing to dream of than the nightmares of the past by far or a possible future of horrors.
What Peter says registers a beat later. She nods mechanically as she accepts the plate. "Right. I have to feed them." She sits up just enough to properly bite into the toast. It isn't until she swallows the first bite she realizes how hungry she actually is. Gamora is quickly working her way through it.

"There's no one else I'd want to do this with either." Gamora confesses softly. She thinks that's obvious in her case. She's never shown interest in anyone else. "I hope they have your eyes. I always thought they were beautiful."

"I hope they get your skin color, it's very pretty. And then the green will match the eyes." Keeping an arm still wrapped around her, he reaches for the plate of food he brought her earlier. It's just toast but it might still help to calm her nerves. "You need to eat something, love."

What Peter says registers a beat later. She nods mechanically as she accepts the plate. "Right. I have to feed them." She sits up just enough to properly bite into the toast. It isn't until she swallows the first bite she realizes how hungry she actually is. Gamora is quickly working her way through it.
